In 1955, Counties Manukau Rugby Football Union was established and played its first match against Thames Valley at Waiuku when they were called as the South Auckland Counties. The first game marked the starting of a new era filled with rich history, with the county narrowly winning 15-14.

 

Much of the history of these counties revolves around adventure football, and teams and unions have struggled to establish their identities over the years. Rugby as a sport has brought pride to the Counties Manukau region and the 'roll up your sleeves and get moving' mentality, driven by countless volunteers, has always been a hallmark of Counties Manukau rugby.

In 1979, the team has won the first division NPC. Since then, the league has had a number of major victories, most recently a second league title in 2012, and their first win of the famous Ranfurly Shield in 2013.

Otago is a New Zealand-based rugby union team located in Dunedin, New Zealand. In 1881, the team was formed, with the NPC which was created in 1976. They are now played on the newly created NPC event. Otago played their home games at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin in Otago. The team is joined by the Highlanders Super Rugby franchise. Their home color is navy blue.
