Lions decide to use two different Squads - URC & Currie Cup

For the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) and Currie Cup competitions, the Lions have confirmed that they will use two different squads.

This weekend, the Lions will kick off their 2022 Currie Cup season with an away game against Western Province, whereas their URC battle will restart on 29, January where they will play against Vodacom Bulls at Ellis Park.

Since then, the two competitions have been played simultaneously, and URC head Coach Ivan van Rooyen confirmed to Rugbylivetv.com that they had chosen to break their squad into two teams.

It's a new approach for us," said Van Rooyen. "There will be some training sessions where we'll play against each other, but most of the time training will be in teams. That's great for both teams' identities.

"The same goes for players. Players on the field need to know where they stand and have a chance to succeed. They can spotlight on a specific game."

He added that the Currie Cup team led by Mziwakhe Nkosi will consist mainly of young players from the Lions youth team who competed last year in the U20 competition.
