2022 Currie Cup Premier Division Schedule

 

• SA Rugby has confirmed that the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division will start in January.
• Seven teams will participate in the Premier Division, and EP's direct entry proposal rejected.
• However, the First Division best teams will automatically advance to the top league, so that from 2023 an eight-person Premier Division will remain.

On Friday, South Africa rugby confirmed that the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division will start in January with seven teams participating.

Before this, the General Council of the country's rugby governing body held an online meeting.

SA Rugby said in a statement that the council had rejected a proposal from the Eastern Province to join the first division.
However, the council agreed to a motion that at the end of the 2022 Currie Cup season, the top teams in the South Africa First Division will automatically be advanced to the Premier Division and create an eight-team Premier Division next season.

SA Rugby added that the promoted team will be consolidated for two seasons (until the end of the Currie Cup season in 2024) when the Premier Division bottom team will automatically transfer to support the top South African teams in the first division. It will also consolidate two seasons before being promoted/relegated at the end of the season 2026.

The teams participating in the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division are Pumas, Griquas, Cheetahs, Lions, Western Province, Sharks, and Bulls, whereas, the First Division teams are South Western Districts, Border, Eastern Province, Boland, Valke, Griffons, and Leopards.

The 2022 Currie Cup event will start on the weekend of January 14/15.

The atypical start was due to the South African domestic rugby calendar being readjusted to merge the Northern Hemisphere season after the Stormers, Sharks, Lions, and Bulls were allowed to enter the URC.

The change means that the Currie Cup Final will be held on June 25th, which will mark the end of the season for professional pro players who compete in the Currie Cup and URC (United Rugby Championship).

South Africa Rugby added the First Division Currie Cup schedule will confirm at the starting of the season.
